Favorite authors are not easy to choose!  I took it to Goodreads and found the authors that had written the top ten books that were not written by an author I had read a book from before.  Some of my favorite authors therefore got cut.  (What? No Harry Potter!?) But I am not disappointed with how it turned out.

relish cover

Lucy Knisley

Relish was by far my favorite graphic novel of 2016.  I am going to be getting some of her other stuff in 2017. I also have some big plans to try the recipes.

beast cover

Brie Spangler

“Trust the process of life, Mother.”

Beast, while not perfect, was a very strong and readable book. I am looking forward to more from her. Question: Why is this book so impossible to find on Goodreads?  I looked up Beast by title and had the scroll through 20 pages and still couldn't find it.  I have the same trouble finding Into White.

endangered

Eliot Schrefer

“You have to learn when to ignore suffering so that you're strong enough to fight it when the time is right.”

I read Endangered in one day (three hour bus ride and five hour train journey) and have no regrets.  It is one of the few contemporary YA books that I have read in a long time where I was genuinely concerned that the MC was going to die.  In a horrible way.  That plus Bonobos meant that I could not look away. I also started reading a lot about the Democratic Republic of the Congo and the most confusing war of all time.

Ashley Hope Pérez

“that he’d gone all the way with her out back of the cafeteria. We didn’t believe him, but we liked”

I have loved EVERY. SINGLE. ONE. of her books. Some of the most realistic, flawed, and likeable heroines that I have ever read.  Have any of you watched My So Called Life?  There is a line in it that reminds me of her writing, "Sometimes, someone says something really small, and it just fits into this empty place in your heart..."

all the light we cannot see cover

Anthony Doerr

“But it is not bravery; I have no choice. I wake up and live my life. Don't you do the same?”

All the Light We Cannot See is a 500 page fairy tale set during WWII.  All the heart eyed emojis for this book.

all american boys cover

Jason Reynolds

“IF YOU ARE NEUTRAL IN SITUATIONS OF INJUSTICE, YOU HAVE CHOSEN THE SIDE OF THE OPPRESSOR.”

I am socked that Jason Reynolds is new to me this year.  I think it is because I have had The Boy in the Back Suit on my TBR pile for 3 years or so that made me think I had read more of his work.  I am disappointed in me and will definitely be rectifying that next year. All American Boys need to be read by everyone.  For me it was both a powerful reading experience and also really helpful in clarifying my feelings.

Daughter of smoke and bone cover

Laini Taylor

“Once upon a time, an angel and a devil fell in love. It did not end well.”

Laini Taylor is a master is mood.  Daughter of Smoke & Bone is one of the most atmospheric and lyrical books that I read this year.

This Savage Song cover

Victoria Schwab

“It was a cruel trick of the universe, thought August, that he only felt human after doing something monstrous.”

No one writes the line between villainy and heroics as blurred as she does. I am looking forward to the sequel to This Savage Song.

The wrath and the Dawn cover

Renee Ahdieh

“Some things exist in our lives for but a brief moment. And we must let them go on to light another sky.”

I have been binging on her stuff this week and kicking myself for not reading them sooner.  I finished The Wrath and the Dawn in two days and I am almost done with The Rose and the Dagger and I think that I might have to read her Flame in the Mist series to get me through to get through until the third book comes out.

Six of Crows cover

Leigh Bardugo

“It's not natural for women to fight."
"It's not natural for someone to be as stupid as he is tall, and yet there you stand.”

Why did I wait so long?  Six of Crows and Crooked Kingdom were both steller.  Every book that I have read of hers has been better than the last.  She is just getting better. Write faster please!
